Toyota Tsusho Corporation's ("Toyota Tsusho") newly established operating company "PT. Patimban International Car Terminal" has taken over the automobile terminal operation business provisionally conducted by the Indonesian state-owned enterprise located at the Patimban New International Port in Subang Regency, West Java, the Republic of Indonesia ("Indonesia"). The Operation has commenced as of December 17, 2021.

1. Background

Along with Indonesia's economic development, the country’s cargo volume has increased rapidly since the mid-2000s, and traffic congestion has been prevalent especially in the Jakarta Metropolitan Area. As such, at the Port of Tanjung Priok, which is the only international port in northern Jakarta, logistics stagnation has been a long-standing issue such as with the continuous adverse effects on access to the eastern industrial zone, where many factories of Japanese companies exist.

2. Overview of the Project

The Patimban New International Port consists of an automobile terminal and container terminal. Under the initiative of the Indonesian government, the plan is for construction to be carried out in stages from the first stage to the third stage*1. Following the conclusion of an Official Development Assistance (ODA) loan agreement of up to 118,906 million yen between Japan and the Indonesian government in November 2017, phase one of the first stage saw the start of construction in 2018 and the completion of some facilities at each terminal in December 2020, the operations of which were provisionally conducted by state-owned enterprises. On December 17, 2021, a ceremony was held at the port with the attendance of Indonesian Minister of Transportation, Budi Karya Sumadi and the Japan Ambassador to Indonesia, Kenji Kanasugi regarding the commencement of full-scale commercial operations of the automobile terminal. Entrusted by "PT. Pelabuhan Patimban Internasional ("PPI")*2, which is invested by four local companies including CT Corp, Toyota Tsusho's newly established operating company "PT. Patimban International Car Terminal ("PICT") will take over the business from the state-owned enterprise and will be responsible for the operation of the automobile terminal.

During phase one of the first stage, an automobile terminal with a handling capacity of 218,000 units/year and a container terminal with a handling capacity of 250,000 TEU*2/year has been constructed. The automobile terminal is planned to be expanded to a handling capacity of 600,000 units/year by 2024, and the container terminal is to be gradually expanded to 7,500,000 TEU. The smooth operation of the Patimban New International Port in the eastern part of the Jakarta Metropolitan Area will disperse cargo to Tanjung Priok Port, alleviating traffic congestion and improving logistics functions in the Jakarta Metropolitan Area. It is expected that logistics costs will be reduced and Indonesia's export competitiveness will be improved.

Toyota Tsusho aims to contribute to the further development of the Indonesian economy through operating a port with international competitiveness in terms of price and services in Indonesia, which is an important production base and sales market in Asia for the automobile industry which includes many Japanese manufacturers such as Toyota.
