Toyota Tsusho Corporation ("Toyota Tsusho"), working with Toyota Motor North America, Inc. ("TMNA"), a North American business unit of Toyota Motor Corporation ("Toyota"), established a new automotive battery production company and is making preparations to start automotive battery production in North America. Recently, the Greensboro-Randolph Megasite in North Carolina was selected as the site for the battery plant. Investment in the new plant will be approximately US$1.29 billion (approximately 143 billion yen; including land and facilities expenses). The name of the new company is Toyota Battery Manufacturing, North Carolina ("TBMNC").

When TBMNC starts operations in 2025, it will have four production lines, each with a production capacity of lithium-ion batteries for 200,000 vehicles. Later, the plant will be expanded to at least six lines with the aim of supplying a total of 1.2 million batteries annually. The project is expected to create about 1,750 new jobs.

Toyota Tsusho has set targets of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 50% compared to 2019 by 2030 and achieving net zero GHG emissions by 2050 and continues to take measures to facilitate the transition to a decarbonized society. TBMNC plans to use 100% renewable energy.

The Toyota Tsusho Group sees climate change as a major issue for all living things on earth and has set "contribute to the transition to a carbon neutral society by reducing CO
2 emissions from automotive, manufacturing, and energy plant construction through the use of clean energy and innovative technologies" as one of the key sustainability issues (materiality) formulated in 2018. As a part of this, the Group sees the automotive battery-related business as a pillar of future growth, and Toyota Tsusho will support the launch and operation of TBMNC through the creation of wide-ranging added value using the expertise accumulated in the automobile production business.

Going forward, Toyota Tsusho will continue to actively undertake the business of renewable energy that does not produce any CO2 and lead the decarbonization of the world so that we can hand down a better global environment to the children of the future. Toyota Tsusho will also contribute to the global transition to a decarbonized society by supplying the batteries that will be essential for an energy transition and actively developing businesses that contribute to GHG reductions, such as the circular economy business, the battery 3Rs (rebuild, reuse, recycle), and the hydrogen and alternative fuel businesses.
