Toyota Tsusho Corporation ("Toyota Tsusho"), as part of its "contribution to the transition to a carbon-free society," has decided to invest in a new company for the production of automotive batteries together with Toyota Motor North America, Inc., the North American business unit of the Toyota Motor Corporation. The new company is first planning to produce lithium-ion batteries for HEVs, and is scheduled to start operations in 2025.

The Toyota Tsusho Group regards climate change as a major issue that affects all living things on the earth, and one of the important sustainability issues (materiality) formulated in 2018 is to "contribute to the transition to a carbon-free society by utilizing clean energy and innovative technologies to reduce the CO₂ output by automobiles/factories and plants." Under these circumstances, Toyota Tsusho considers the automotive battery-related business as a pillar of growth for the next generation, and made this investment with the belief that it can create a wide range of added value by making use of know-how cultivated in the automobile production business.

Going forward, in order to deliver a better global environment to the children of the future, Toyota Tsusho will continue to actively work on renewable energy business that does not emit CO₂, and lead the world in de-carbonization. Toyota Tsusho will also supply batteries that are indispensable for energy transition, participate in businesses that contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases, such as helping in the collection and reuse of garbage and industrial waste, practicing 3R (rebuilding, reusing, and recycling) of batteries, and participate in hydrogen and alternative fuel businesses. Toyota Tsusho will contribute to the development of a carbon-free society around the world.
