Toyota Tsusho Corporation ("Toyota Tsusho") announced today that Karada Station, its IoT-based health management system, has been introduced as a health management system at Crosse Akita, a condominium within the Akita version of the Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) project developed by three companies--Akita Real Estate Service Co. Ltd., Daikyo Incorporated, and Misawa Homes Co., Ltd. in April 2021.

A CCRC is a community where middle-aged and elderly people move to while they can still live on their own and can receive nursing, health, and medical care as needed. The introduction of Karada Station marks the first case of an IoT-based health management system being introduced at a CCRC in Japan.

1. Background and circumstances leading to the introduction

The significance of health management and preventive nursing care in daily lives is growing in Japan, where the population is rapidly aging. In Akita Prefecture, there are issues such as an increase in the proportion of the elderly resulting from the declining birthrate and aging population, a decrease in the population due to residents leaving the prefecture, and a short healthy life expectancy, and measures to address these issues needed to be undertaken.

Crosse Akita was completed in October 2020 to solve these issues and revitalize the region. It has the business objectives of revitalizing the urban area, promoting the health of local residents, and providing high-quality living. To promote the health of local residents, which is one of the business objectives, it is effective to collect and manage the health data of individuals and provide support and guidance according to their health conditions. Karada Station, which has such data collection and management functions, has been chosen as a health management system for Crosse Akita.

2. Methods for using Karada Station

Karamo—a specialized wearable device for measuring exercise data—and specialized measuring instruments (blood pressure and body composition monitors) will be provided to the residents of Crosse Akita and local residents, and daily exercise data and physical data will be comprehensively managed using the Karada Station system. Based on the data, Karada Station users can receive health advice at a health consultation center within the commercial area of Crosse Akita. As the data can be viewed on a specialized application website, family members living apart can also monitor the health conditions of the user at any time. Moreover, there is a plan to make points that can be obtained through the system after exercise redeemable for coupons, thereby encouraging purchasing activity in collaboration with shopping arcades and department stores. We will contribute to regional revitalization in Akita Prefecture by not only promoting the health of local residents but also encouraging regional interaction and purchasing activity.

Toyota Tsusho supports healthy and enriching living environments through its business and promotes healthy longevity in an aging society, thereby contributing to the achievement of Goal 3 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set forth by the UN, “Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.”
