Four main reasons, listed below, were given for the selection of Toyota Tsusho.

Toyota Tsusho’s health and productivity management initiatives

1. In fiscal year 2021, Toyota Tsusho introduced the “Health Lifestyles Challenge 8 Program”, which encourages health improvements in eight areas: appropriate weight, exercise, drinking, smoking, breakfast, snacking, sleep, and stress. These activities can be expected to lead to improvements in lifestyle-related diseases and mental health. The company also carries out health management centered on preventing cancer and infectious diseases.

Today, the average age of the population is rising, obesity rates are growing, and rates of lifestyle-related diseases are increasing. Toyota Tsusho wishes to empower all its employees, both in Japan and overseas, to practice independent health management in any and every environment; to this end, it is working to improve health literacy—which it sees as a top-priority health management issue—and to improve the mental and physical health of its employees through related activities.

2. Besides creating an environment that makes it easy to check one’s health, such as increasing the number of in-house clinics, Toyota Tsusho has maintained a consultation rate of 100% for routine health checks since fiscal 2014 and the consultation rate for detailed examinations has increased to reach 97.1% in fiscal 2020 by strengthening engagement from occupational nursing staff toward those with diagnoses. In addition, the effects of early measures also show in the medical fees from fiscal 2017 to fiscal 2020, including a reduction of 9.2%.

3. A survey carried out at Toyota Tsusho’s 2019 Smoking Cessation Seminar indicated that 45% of smokers were interested in attending smoking cessation clinics; the company subsequently introduced a smoking cessation treatment full-subsidy system. In fiscal 2020, 71 company employees successfully quit smoking, including those who quit smoking unaided. Over the last two years, the smoking rate among male employees has fallen by more than four percentage points, from 29.9% to 25.8%.

In addition, for female employees, which make up approximately one-third of the entire company, expansion of cancer screening subsidy systems and organizing of seminars are carried out as measures against female-specific cancers.

4. As part of its response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Toyota Tsusho introduced a work-from-home scheme for all employees in April 2020. Mindful of the impact of working from home on lifestyle-related diseases and mental wellbeing, from an early stage the company has communicated information about how to promote healthy lifestyles when working from home through lectures given by occupational health physicians and through its Health Management Office, with the goal of maintaining or improving the health awareness of its employees.

Toyota Tsusho recognizes that the physical and mental health of employees is the company’s most important asset. Going forward, Toyota Tsusho will continue to undertake health and productivity management based on the three pillars of employee health, improvement of workplace vitality, and social contribution.
