Toyota Tsusho Invests in JEMS Which Undertakes Business in Environmental IT Solutions

Toyota Tsusho Corporation ("Toyota Tsusho") announces that it has invested in JEMS Inc. ("JEMS") on August 27, 2020. JEMS provides IT solutions and information management services for the optimization of resource recycling. Going forward, Toyota Tsusho will be dispatching a director to support reverse supply chain* optimization and overseas deployment.

1.Background

In the industry for waste, there are many issues. These issues include strict rules regarding the collection, transportation, storage, disposal, and management of waste as well as differences in the interpretation of such rules by local administrations. Regarding these issues, JEMS provides IT services specializing in the industry for waste. JEMS boasts top-class industry share through providing environmental compliance services for operators emitting waste and mission-critical systems for industrial waste disposal operators. Furthermore, JEMS provides IT solutions and operation services to public infrastructure businesses for transportation management of disaster waste and other waste after ensuring their traceability.

2.Purpose

Toyota Tsusho added Circular Economy as one of its priority areas in its three years management plan from fiscal 2020. Toyota Tsusho has been undertaking business in resource circulation and recycling for a long time and boasts a high share in the industry especially for the recycling of valuables such as metal scraps generated by manufacturing plants and other facilities. The specialized knowledge and IT technologies that JEMS possesses in the environmental industry will be utilized in the resource circulation and recycling business of the Toyota Tsusho Group to create new added value and provide it to customers. Furthermore, it will contribute to the development of a recycling-based society which is one of the CSR materiality (material issues) for the Toyota Tsusho Group.

* Reverse supply chain: This refers to the flow of goods where products are collected and reused. It is an initiative for reducing waste.
