Artist Biography
Gosette Lubondo Diakota is a Congolese visual artist immersed in photography from childhood through her father, who was a photographer. She graduated in Visual Communication from the Academy of Fine Arts in Kinshasa in 2014.
Through staged photography and performance, Lubondo revisits abandoned spaces—particularly sites marked by colonial and post-colonial histories—reintroducing human presence into architectural ruins. By examining these evocative spaces, Lubondo interrogates the role of memory and remembrance in the construction of contemporary Congolese society.
Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Kampala Biennale (Uganda), Lubumbashi Biennale (Democratic Republic of the Congo), Hirosaki Museum in 2024 (Japan), and the Fowler Museum at UCLA (USA). In 2021, she received the Maison Ruinart Prize at Paris Photo.
Her works are held in major collections including mus.e du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac (France), Kanal-Centre Pompidou (Belgium), Frac Nouvelle-Aquitaine (France), Saint Louis Art Museum (USA), and Mast Foundation (Italy).
Message from Artist
I am deeply honoured to be among the winners of THE TOYOTA TSUSHO CFAO African Art Award ; for me, this represents a profound blend of recognition and prestige.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to TOYOTA TSUSHO CFAO team for this initiative. It not only celebrates and encourages the creative energy of artists across the continent but also projects our collective vision of the world towards new and diverse horizons.
My heartfelt thanks go to the members of the jury and the nominators for selecting my work from among such a remarkable field of candidates.
For several years now, my practice has interrogated the notion of memory, exploring the grip of time through both individual and collective narratives, as well as the sites that embody this heritage. I give form to these themes through photographic performances, video, and installations.
For this award, I have the honour of presenting the photographic series Terre de lait, terre de miel (2022–2025) and Imaginary Trip III (2024).”
