Toyota Tsusho Corporation ("Toyota Tsusho") announced today that its group company CFAO SAS ("CFAO") has acquired 75% of the shares in "Medswana", a major pharmaceutical wholesaler in the Republic of Botswana. CFAO has also acquired shares in "Opham", a major pharmaceutical wholesaler in the Republic of Madagascar, making it a subsidiary. These acquisitions are intended to accelerate the expansion of CFAO's healthcare business across Southern Africa.

1. Background

In Africa, demand for medicines is rising along with population and economic growth, while strengthening healthcare systems has become an urgent issue. This includes expanding the healthcare workforce, developing healthcare infrastructure, and building safe pharmaceutical distribution networks that prevent counterfeit medicines from entering the supply chain.
To date, the Toyota Tsusho Group has developed a pharmaceutical wholesale distribution business supplying more than 11,000 pharmacies across 24 African countries, mainly in West Africa, and has also engaged in pharmaceutical production in North Africa and elsewhere. Building on this, in 2025 the Group made Goodlife Pharmacy, a leading retail pharmacy chain with approximately 150 locations in East Africa, a wholly owned subsidiary. The Group is now creating a vertically integrated value chain that links local pharmaceutical production with wholesale and retail.

2. Expanding the Value Chain into Southern Africa

In October 2024, the Toyota Tsusho Group established CFAO Healthcare South Africa by acquiring the O-T-C (over the counter) business of major French pharmaceutical company Sanofi in the Republic of South Africa (namely Opella South Africa), and began local production and distribution of pharmaceuticals in the country.
With the aim of building a healthcare value chain that spans the Southern African region, the Group has now welcomed Medswana and Opham as new group companies. The two companies rank first in private-market share for pharmaceutical distribution in Botswana and Madagascar, respectively.
Through these acquisitions, the Group will strengthen the foundation of its healthcare business in Southern Africa and expand its pharmaceutical distribution network, which ensures quality control, compliance, and traceability.

3. Future Developments

By further expanding its business in Southern Africa, the Toyota Tsusho Group will build a highly reliable healthcare value chain covering production, wholesale and retail, and will work to improve access to high-quality medicines.
The Toyota Tsusho Group has positioned Africa, India and South America as key markets under its Gondwana Economic Zone Strategy, and is working to expand businesses rooted in the latent needs of each region. Under the philosophy of “WITH AFRICA FOR AFRICA,” the Group will continue to contribute both to solving social issues and to economic development, in order to pass on a better Earth to the children of the future.
