Background
In Kenya and other areas of East Africa, the markets for sanitary products and disposable diapers are expected to grow further alongside rising living standards and increased awareness of hygiene.
CFAO Kenya, a Toyota Tsusho Group company, and Unicharm commenced the import and sales of “SOFY Deep Absorb,” a premium sanitary napkin produced at Unicharm’s Egypt Plant, in Kenya in 2023. In January 2025, they commenced the local production and sales of “SOFY Long Lasting,” a reliable quality product at an affordable price.
Subsequently, following the positive reception from customers in Kenya, the companies decided to establish a joint venture with the aim of accelerating full-scale business expansion in East Africa and contributing to the resolution of social issues, including improving women’s sanitary environment and promoting women’s social advancement.
Future Outlook
SOFY UNICHARM EAST AFRICA LIMITED, which is now beginning operations, will ensure a stable supply of high-quality sanitary products and disposable diapers in the East African market. It will also establish a business foundation capable of responding swiftly to local needs to drive market expansion. Toyota Tsusho will leverage the logistics network owned by CFAO Kenya to ensure a stable supply of products and develop new markets, with the aim of improving access to sanitary products and achieving sustainable business growth in East Africa.
In addition, Toyota Tsusho will work with Unicharm to deliver sustainable and regionally rooted value, support healthier and more comfortable lives for local people, and contribute to solving regional social issues.
