Toyota Tsusho Corporation ("Toyota Tsusho") announced today that it started to collaborate with an outdoor clothing & gear company Patagonia International Inc. ("Patagonia") and participate in its T-Shirt recycling business ("Tee-Cycle™")

1. Background

The fashion industry has been identified as an industry with an extremely large environmental impact due to factors such as the amount of energy used in production and short life cycles, making it an global issue. There is currently a global demand to reduce its environmental impact and shift to a sustainable structure. However, such initiatives are still limited in Japan.

Toyota Tsusho is working to co-create a clothing circulation model with various partner companies in Japan and overseas in order to reduce this environmental impact.

Based on its mission statement of “We’re in business to save our home planet,” Patagonia is not only manufacturing and selling clothing, but also promoting environmental protection activities. It is taking on the challenge of switching its fibers to 100% renewable raw material fibers and recycled fibers.

2. Details of Collaboration

Toyota Tsusho has been supplying Patagonia with the originally designed fabrics for more than 20 years and has been supporting Patagonia’s progressive and environmentally conscious product development. With Tee-Cycle™, Toyota Tsusho has begun to work to separate and classify collected cotton products and transport them to recycling companies. It will realize the establishment of a clothing circulation model for used cotton products collected from consumers for the first time by playing a role in the supply chain of recycling-based products that recycle used clothing for re-use as clothing.

Toyota Tsusho contributes to the realization of a circular economy by promoting recycling-oriented venous businesses that recycle waste in order to pass on a better global environment to the children of the future. It will also create opportunities and the future where all discarded clothing is remade again as clothing.
