Toyoda Tsusho waslisted in section two of the Nagoya Stock Exchange in October 1961 and thenredesignated to section one in September 1975, but the system began before that.In April 1983, an age-60 retirement system was implemented and a specialistprofession system was established. To utilize advanced knowledge and skills,professional courses were approved based on self-assessments, personnelevaluations, and managerial aptitude tests. In addition, starting in July 1972,Saturdays were made a holiday once a month using the shift system, and this wasincreased to three times a month in January 1987. From November 1985, the assetsavings system was introduced.Computer training3 Progress of ComputerizationIn 1964, Toyoda Tsusho began its computerization. Initially, this was based onbatch processing and a punch card system that was introduced to streamline theprocessing of slips for deliveries. In April 1969, a computer team that embodiedcomputerization became independent from the Accounting Department and wasmade the Computer Department in November of the same year.In October 1971, the IBM360-M40 was introduced as the main computer,and full-scale computerization was taken on. Toyoda Tsusho also worked oncomputerization at branch offices, and computers were introduced at the OsakaBranch in October 1970 and at the Tokyo Branch in April 1972, after whichthe branches began exchanging data with steel company partners. In 1979, thecompany’s first online order entry system was put into operation in the MachineryDepartment. In 1984, Toyoda Tsusho introduced the IBM550 workstation, amultifunction terminal. In addition to streamlining daily operations along withoffice automation, in the latter half of the 1980s the company promoted onlinedata exchange between companies by directly connecting its computers with thoseof the Toyota Group companies and major business partners.In July 1984, with the Computer Department made independent, ToyotsuInformation System Co., Ltd. (currently Toyotsu Syscom), was established, andToyota Tsusho embarked on the commercialization of information processingwhile improving the efficiency of systems development. In January 1986, the NewMedia Office was established, and it worked on commercialization plans for thecommunications field and on strategic planning for in-house information systems.In 1985, the company implemented its TRADES Development Plan withthe goal of an advanced in-house information system, including at affiliatedcompanies. TRADES stands for“Toyotsu Revolutional Advanced EnterpriseSystem.”In response to the rapid progress of the information society, suchas networking and database creation, the aim was to build more-advancedinformation systems and make strategic use of them for management purposes.This TRADES system was improved on and evolved into TRADES II.80
