Part 1Pathway to Becoming a GeneralTrading Company, 1948-1988Over the eight years of war, the Japanese economy suffered immense damage, but beginning in thelatter half of the 1950s it saw rapid and unprecedented growth. After the war, Toyota Sangyo, whichhad been converted from the Toyota Group’s holding company to a business mainly concerned withsales, was reborn as Nisshin Tsusho in 1948. In 1956, the name was changed again to Toyoda Tsushoand the company expanded its operations together with the growth of the Japanese economy and theToyota Motor Corporation (TMC).However, due to the two oil crises that occurred in the 1970s, the period of rapid economic growth cameto an end.
