Acquisition of Greenhouse Gas Emission Rights from China
2007-03-01
Toyota Tsusho Corporation (Headquarters: Nagoya City; President: Junzo Shimizu) acquires greenhouse gas emission rights from their promotion of a methane power generation project using the clean development mechanism (CDM) at a landfill processing facility (landfill) in Jiangsu Province, China.
This operation has been promoted as part of the business for preventing global warming, through activities relating to the expansion of emission rights trading and greenhouse gas reductions. An application was filed with the United Nations recently and it is anticipated to be registered there.
This project involves the recovery of gas that contains a large amount of methane (landfill gas) generated at the landfill processing facility of Wuxi City in Jiangsu Province of China and used for generating electrical power, which is then supplied to the regional power grid. The reduction of greenhouse gas conducted through the following two activities implemented by this project is expected to eliminate approximately 750,000 tons of carbon dioxide within ten years.
(1) Methane, which has 21 times the greenhouse effect of carbon dioxide, had in the past been released into the atmosphere and is now burned and converted into carbon dioxide.
(2) Electrical power is generated using gas engines (two units, 1 MW/h each) and sold to the utility company to replace some of the electrical power generated using fossil fuels.
Untreated methane is being released at some landfill processing facilities in China. Two business organizations, Toyota Tsusho and Wuxi Tianshun Environmental Technology Co. Ltd., aim to put a stop to this current situation by implementing this project. It is hoped that the project will be able to facilitate sustainable development of the region, as well as make contributions towards preventing global warming.
The greenhouse gas emission rights obtained for this project entail the entire amount up to year 2012. The gas from such emissions is sold to Chubu Electric Power Co.,Inc.
Toyota Tsusho will continue to participate in emission rights trading and the implementation of JI and CDM operations in the future, to contribute towards the prevention of global warming.
