Shell GTL Fuel powers hybrid diesel bus at Aichi Expo, Japan
2005-07-27
Shell International Gas Ltd., Showa Shell Sekiyu K.K, Toyota Tsusho Corporation and JR Tokai Bus Company, are co-operating in the first demonstration of Gas to Liquids (GTL Fuel) in a hybrid diesel bus. The bus will carry visitors to the 2005 World Exposition at Aichi, as well as commuters in Seto City and Kasugai City.
Shell International Gas Ltd. will supply GTL Fuel from Shell MDS (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd's commercial plant at Bintulu, for a shuttle bus operated by JR Tokai Bus Company. Showa Shell Sekiyu KK and Toyota Tsusho Corporation are providing technical support in the world's first supply of the clean fuel to a Hino advanced hybrid heavy-duty vehicle. The demonstration was launched today for a period of two months.
Jack Jacometti, VP GTL Global Development, Shell International Gas Ltd. said, 'This is the first demonstration of GTL Fuel in a hybrid bus, supporting the drivers for energy policy in Japan of energy security, efficiency and a cleaner environment'.
At the same time of the trial launch in Aichi, a panel discussion of distinguished speakers will be held in Tokyo on the development of GTL Fuel in Japan. The event will be co-hosted by Mr. Haruyuki Niimi, Chairman, Showa Shell Sekiyu KK and Mr. Masahiro Tanizeki, Senior Managing Director, Toyota-Tsusho Corporation. The speakers include Mr. Hirofumi Katase, Director METI (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry), Mr. Tatehito Ueda, Managing Officer, Toyota Motor Corporation, Jack Jacometti, VP Global GTL Development, Shell International Gas Ltd. and Mr. Masatoshi Shimoda, Director, HINO Motors Corp. The discussion takes place at the Tokyo International Forum before an audience of invited guests from the government, automotive and energy industries.
GTL Fuel is made from natural gas, offering strategic diversification of energy for Japan, by reducing dependence on petroleum based transport fuels. GTL Fuel is colourless, odourless and cleaner than conventional refinery produced diesel fuel. It is virtually free of sulphur and aromatics. A significant number of trials around the world, including Japan, have confirmed that it significantly reduces local emissions of particulates and carbon monoxide.
Hybrid diesel technology enables the combination of highly efficient diesel engines with electric battery power. Through the use of advanced fuels and engine technology in this demonstration, the four companies are supporting the 'Nature's Wisdom' theme of the Aichi Expo by reducing the impact of public transport on the environment and developing more efficient technologies.
Co-operation continues between the Japanese Government, the automotive and energy industry contributing to Japan as a role model in promoting energy efficiency.
