Disaster Prevention Ship Delivered to Indonesian Ministry of Communications

2005-01-28

Tomen Corporation has completed the delivery of a Disaster Prevention Ship, the KN. Arda Dedali , to Directorate General of Sea Communication (DGSC), Ministry of Communications of the Republic of Indonesia. The handover ceremony attended by Indonesian Communications Minister Hatta Rajasa was held in the Indonesian port of Surabaya on January 27.

The KN. Arda Dedali is the first of two Disaster Prevention Ships to be supplied to the DGSC by Tomen in a joint operation with Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES). Built by Niigata Shipbuilding & Repair Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of MES, the ship was completed on December 14, 2004, and delivered to the Indonesian port of Surabaya on December 28 after about 10 days voyage. The other ship is under construction in Indonesia. The contract amount of the two ships is approximately three billion yen.

The ship is equipped with special equipments and is specially designed to deal with various accidents at sea, such as rescue services, firefighting and against oil spills. It will be deployed in the Malacca - Singapore Straits, one of the most important international maritime locations. In addition, it is also expected that the ship will contribute to the fight against crime in the neighboring area.

The ship would also contribute to take urgent action for searching survivors at sea in case of tsunami due to earthquake such as happened in Sumatra area at the end of 2004.

Due to shortage of ships against maritime accidents in Indonesia, DGSC requested earlier delivery of the ship. With intensive efforts to shorten time in design and building, the ship was delivered within a very short period prior to the contractual delivery date.

This project is supported by Japanese ODA to the Indonesian Government.
