In February 2002, Tomen, MHI and N.C. Maritime Ports Administration Constantza S.A., Romanian port authority, signed a contract worth approximately 4.5 billion yen to supply cargo handling equipment, including gantry cranes and yard equipments, for the project.
The government of Romania has been developing the largest commercial port in the country. The government of Japan provided a yen credit loan for the project, the first large-scale yen credit economic cooperative program between the two countries.
Delivery of the equipment was completed in November 2003 as scheduled. The consortium of Tomen and MHI supplied a range of equipment for the container terminal on a turnkey basis.
Tomen supplied terminal tractors (35 units), forklifts (5 units), chassis (40 units), a reach stacker (1 unit) and front spreader lift trucks (2 units). MHI supplied post-Panamax size ship-to-shore gantry cranes (3 units), rubber tire gantry transfer cranes (8 units) and rail-mounted gantry cranes (2 units) for loading and unloading railroad trains.
The Tomen-MHI consortium was awarded this international tender in 2002, which was selected for its high quality technology and service among four multinational consortiums.
