Tomen Wins an Order for Port Development Projects from the Government of Indonesia

2002-05-30

Tomen Corporation received an order from Directorate General of Sea Communications (DGSC), Ministry of Communications of the Republic of Indonesia, to supply a set of cargo handling equipment for Kupang and Bitung Port Development Project (Package II) in Indonesia. Tomen and DGSC signed the contract, valued at approximately 1.0 billion yen, on May 28, 2002 in Jakarta. Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) will provide a Yen Credit loan for the project.

The marine transportation sector of the government of Indonesia planned the port development projects based on its five-year national program. Container and bulk cargo handling volume at Kupang Port and Bitung Port has been continuously increasing. The aim of the project is to expand their cargo handling capacities and to modernize the equipment and facilities of the two ports.

Delivery of the equipment is scheduled for February 2004. Tomen will supply tugboats (2 units), a mooring boat (1 unit) and a pilot boat (1 unit). Local shipyards in Indonesia construct these boats supervised by Niigata Engineering. Tomen will also supply a mobile crane (1 unit), a reach stacker crane (1 unit), forklifts (4 units) and other equipment from Japan.

Tomen was awarded this international contract in August 2001, as a result of its expertise, the high quality of technology and its competitive bid, beating two other Japanese trading companies. In addition to the lowest price, by building the boats at local shipyards, Tomen and Niigata Engineering's transfer of high quality skills and technology to industry in Indonesia will add extended value to the project when completed.

Tomen has helped to develop many port-related projects in Indonesia in the past twenty years, such as port facilities, marine telecommunications, marine boat and equipment and ship crew education facilities.

Commenting on the project, Tomen's president, Mr. Morihiko Tashiro, said, "Tomen is proud of its strong record of contribution to the development of port infrastructures in Indonesia. We look forward to continuing to provide our partners in Indonesia high quality technology and expertise and to growing what have become truly productive partnerships."

Tomen established its Jakarta office in 1950, Bandung in 1969 and Surabaya in 1920 and has provided expertise in many business fields in Indonesia, including chemicals and plastics, textiles, foodstuffs, machinery, IT and telecommunications and power supply.
