Tomen, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Romanian Port Authority Sign Contract for Port Development Project; Strengthens Romania-Japan Relations

Maritime Ports Administration Constantza S.A. of Romania signed a contract worth approximately 4.5 billion yen to supply a set of cargo handling equipment, including gantry cranes and yard equipments, for a container terminal development project of Constantza Port, the largest commercial port in Romania. | |  |
Delivery of the equipment is scheduled in the summer of 2003. The ceremony celebrating the contract was held on February 4 in Bucharest, Romania.
The government of Romania has been developing the largest commercial port in the country. The government of Japan provides a Yen Credit loan for the project, the first large-scale Yen Credit economic cooperative program between the two countries. The year 2002 is the 100th anniversary of Romania-Japan diplomatic relationship.
The consortium of Tomen and MHI supplies a range of equipment for the container terminal on a turn key basis. MHI supplies post-Panamax size ship-to-shore gantry cranes (3 units), rubber tired gantry transfer cranes (8 units) and rail-mounted gantry cranes (2 units) for loading and unloading to railroad trains. Tomen supplies terminal tractors (35 units) and other yard equipment. The Tomen-MHI consortium was awarded this international tender, which was selected for its high quality technology and service among four multinational consortiums.
Commenting on the project, Tomen's president, Mr. Morihiko Tashiro, said, "Tomen is proud to contribute to the development of Romania's economy through this project, which sends a message about the importance of Japan and Romania working together. "
Tomen established its Bucharest office in 1972 and has provided expertise in many business fields in Romania, including textiles, chemicals and plastics, machinery, and telecommunications projects. Tomen Communications Romania Srl is a subsidiary formed to implement its telecommunications projects and to import and distribute domestically telecommunications equipment and materials.
