Toyota Tsusho Corporation (Toyota Tsusho) today announced that as of February 2017 it has joined SEA\LNG Limited (SEA\LNG), an industry coalition aiming to accelerate the widespread adoption of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a marine fuel.

Over recent years, there have been moves to help protect the marine environment by toughening emissions regulations for marine fuel to reduce sulfur oxide (SOx), nitrogen oxide (NOx), and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. In October 2016, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) made to decision to significantly cut the sulfur content limit for marine fuel in general sea areas, reducing the limit from the current 3.5% to 0.5% from 2020. With this limit, the current marine fuel oil (Class C according to the Japanese Industrial Standard) will have to be changed by using fuel oil that complies with the regulations, by using a substitute fuel oil like LNG that has an equivalent effect, or by using emission purifying equipment. Of these, LNG is attracting attention as a promising option because it not only reduces SOx, but also reduces NOx and CO2 as well.

Through its marine fuel supply subsidiary Toyota Tsusho Petroleum Pte. Ltd., Toyota Tsusho supplies mostly Singapore and the rest of Asia with five million tons of marine fuel annually (mostly Class C), which makes it one of the largest Japanese companies in the market. Thanks to low-cost and stable marine fuel supplies in the past, Toyota Tsusho has played its role in the growth of international marine shipping and, by extension, world trade. It has taken the opportunity offered by this important change to marine fuels, due to recent environmental regulations, to quickly respond and join SEA\LNG.

Going forward, Toyota Tsusho will collaborate with other companies to promote global use of LNG and help resolve its issues. Through stable supply of low-cost environmental marine fuel, it will also contribute to the protection of marine environments and the development of international trade.
