Scale of Domestic Agricultural Production Business Expanded
2009-07-14
Vegi Dream Kurihara Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Vegi Dream Kurihara"; Headquarters: Kurihara City, Miyagi Prefecture; Chief Representative Officer: Toru Sasakawa), an agricultural production corporation with capital from Toyota Tsusho Foods Corporation (hereinafter referred to as "Toyota Tsusho Foods"; Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Seiichiro Takahashi), which is a consolidated subsidiary of Toyota Tsusho Corporation (hereinafter referred to as the "Company"; Headquarters: Nagoya City; President: Junzo Shimizu), established the company's second paprika cultivation facility in Kurihara City of Miyagi Prefecture, thereby expanding the scale of the company's business.
Toyota Tsusho Foods established Vegi Dream Kurihara jointly with local farmers in July 2008 as their point of entry into the domestic agricultural industry in Japan. A large-scale greenhouse facility with a steel frame structure, encompassing an area of 0.7 hectares (commonly referred to as the "Air House"), was constructed in Kurihara City of Miyagi Prefecture, and the paprika cultivation business is currently developing. The first harvesting season was in June 2009.
A decision to construct a facility at the second location was made in light of the expansion and enhancement of domestic vegetable production taking place recently in Japan, to respond to demand for domestically produced vegetables. This decision was made with the objective of offering produce that is "fresh and tasty" and that gives "peace of mind with assurances of safety" for consumption, as well as doing our part in the "development of local communities while contributing to them".
<Summary of second greenhouse facility>
Production location: Takashimizu, Kurihara City, Miyagi Prefecture
Business scale: Land area: 6.2 hectares
Cultivation area: 4.2 hectares (largest paprika cultivating facility in Japan)
Facility structure: Large greenhouse with steel frame structure
Cultivation method: Hydroponic cultivation
Construction completion date: March 2010 (planned)
It is our intention to increase the volume of production as well as the market share of paprika with the Kurihara brand and to raise recognition of the brand in the future, through our policy "Aim to Become Number One in Paprika Production within Japan". We are aspiring to offer domestically produced vegetables and fruits that "give peace of mind with assurances of safety" for consumption, with annual sales of JPY10 billion in the future.
We will also make efforts in our activities from the perspective of taking part in the development of local communities and contributing to them for the purpose of revitalizing the communities of Kurihara City and Miyagi Prefecture, which have been so supportive of Vegi Dream Kurihara's business activities.
This business operation has furthermore been accredited as a business eligible for the "Project Eligible to Receive a Grant for the Creation of a Strong Agricultural Industry" scheme of FY2009.
