Maritime Telecommunication System Development Project Contract in Indonesia

2009-02-18

Japan Radio Co., Ltd. (hereinafter "JRC"; Headquarters: Mitaka City, Tokyo; President: Yorihisa Suwa? and Toyota Tsusho Corporation (hereinafter "Toyota Tsusho"; Headquarters: Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture; President: Junzo Shimizu) on Tuesday, February 17 were jointly contracted by the Directorate General of Sea Transportation (DGST), a division of the Indonesian Department of Transport, for a yen-financed "Maritime Telecommunication System Development Project [IV]" in Indonesia. The total value of the project is around 4.4 billion yen and final completion of the system is scheduled for January 2011.

The project is for the delivery and installation of telecommunications devices compliant with the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), the maintenance of existing GMDSS radio stations and towers, installation of an Automatic Identification System (AIS) for ships, establishment of a general maintenance center, and improvement of facilities at training centers. It covers 48 sites within Indonesia.

The project will see a dramatic improvement in the coverage area within which distressed ships in Indonesian coastal waters are able to swiftly contact the nearest coastal radio station, greatly assisting future search and rescue operations in Indonesia.

The contract was made possible by evaluating the superior GMDSS technology developed by JRC, which boasts extensive experience in developing telecommunications devices for both ships and coastal radio stations. Following completion of the Maritime Telecommunication System Development Project, JRC and Toyota Tsusho plan to promote the further development of a system for safety navigation of the Indonesian straits to the Indonesian Ministry of Transport, thus continuing their contribution to the safety of ships navigating Indonesian waters.
